Introduction

Johnny’s Jr (ジャニーズJr) is a part of Johnny & Associates. It consists of boys who don’t have single page in Johnny’s official website or release CD debut. They have activity as an individual or in a unit. Johnny’s Jr acted as back dancer belonging debut groups.

History

In the past, there was a band under the name of “Johnny’s Junior” (ジャニーズ・ジュニア)   formed in 1963. It was a back band of Johnny’s (group). Beside that, they had activity live in jazz cafe. It was called as the first Johnny’s Jr, but at the end only Kita Koji bacame an official Jr.

From 1971 to 1972, the name of “Johnny’s Jr ” was temporary dissapeared. They named as “Juke Box Junior” (ジューク・ボックス・ジュニア) instead. Their activities were “Shonentachi Series 5 ~ Four Leaves Musical Ashita Naki Yujo” in August 1971, “Shonentachi Series 6 ~ Four Leaves Live Musical Ikite Iku no wa Bokutachi da!” in January to March 1972, “Four Leaves Monogatari ~ Boshi ni Kaetta Wakamono” in December 1972 and so on. Since December 1972, they joined TV program with Go Hiromi.

In December 1973, a group consist of 9 members named “Johnny’s Junior” (1st generation)” was formed. It was back dancer of Go Hiromi and Four Leaves. Then in 1974, Johnny Kitagawa was divided it into two new groups. 6 members in “Mets” (メッツ) and 9 members in “JOHNNYS’ Junior Special” (JOHNNYS’ ジュニア・スペシャル) or JJS.

Until 1976, Johnny’s Junior had 7th generation and it became the last. After JJS disbanded, fans called Johnny’s Jr as “Junikko” (ジャニっ子) and office called them as “Johnny’s Shonentai” (ジャニーズ少年隊). In 1981, a group named “Johnny’s Shonentai” (later changed as Shonentai) was form. Since then, Johnny’s Jr called as “Johnny’s Juniors” (ジャニーズ・ジュニアーズ) but then it back to “Johnny’s Jr”.

In mid 1990, there was TV program “Junior” made them gained popularity. Even they had concert which held in Nippon Budokan and 3 big dome.

Kind of Jr

Johnny’s Jr is divided into three based on the region. They are Johnny’s Jr (ジャニーズJr.) Kansai Johnny’s Jr (関西ジャニーズJr.) and Nagoya Johnny’s Jr (名古屋ジャニーズJr.).

1. Johnny’s Jr

Jrs in the Kanto basically called as Johnny’s Jr. But among fans, in order to make a difference they called as “Tokyo Jr” and “Kansai Jr.”

2. Kansai Johnny’s Jr

Kansai Johnny’s Jr can be called as Kanju (関ジュ). It consist of Jrs who passed the audition in Kansai region.

3. Nagoya Johnny’s Jr

Nagoya Johnny’s Jr can be called as Nagoju (名古ジュ). Not every year Johnny’s held an audition in Nagoya. It stopped on December 2003. Then after Johnny’s held again on February 2012, it dissapeared. Since Nagoya Jr. has little exposure to television and magazines, it is hard to understand the entrance or exit status in the office, and the enrolled is often unknown. The main activities of Nagoya Jr. are back dancers when seniors perform concerts around Aichi Prefecture. Some may be transferred to Kanto Jr or Kansai Jr. In the other hand some of them become Nagoya Jr from Kanto Jr and Kansai Jr. Senga Kento (Kis-My-Ft2) and Hirano Sho (King & Prince) were the originally members of Nagoju. The other members were: Akita Ken, Ando Takanori, Ikeda Naoki, Ishida Tomohito (transferred from Kansai Jr), Iwasa Hideto, Ohsugi Naoya, Okada Junya, Okuda Akihiro, Ochiai Yusuke, Okamoto Kauan (transferred to Kansai Jr then Tokyo Jr), Kanego Naoyuki (transferred to Tokyo Jr), Kobayashi Hiroshi, Saito Masaki, Sano Mitsuji, Sawada Ryosuke, Takada Ken, Tsuboi Yuki, Nagura Shun, Maruyama Hiroshi (transferred from Kansai Jr), Mizuno Keita, Mizuno Shogo, Mizuno Motohiro, Yamada Taihei, Yamamoto Kento and Watanabe Kazuki (transferred from Kanasi Jr).

4. Genki Jr

Genki Jr (元気Jr.), also called as Genjuni (げんジュニ) was a fans of Johnny’s Jr selected for open audition in TV Asahi Program “Tensai Takeshi Genki Johnny’s Jobiko.” It was aired on February 26, 1995. 11 candidates from 1,000 applicants were chosen for the first phrase and 5 candidates for the second one. They appeared on “Kindaichi Shonen no Jikenbo” which aired on April 8, 1995. The members were Okada Junichi (V6), Hirano Yuki, Watanabe Rui, Anbai Masahiko, Kimura Shinichi and Ichimura Toshihide.

5. Concert Jr

Concert Jr (コンサートJr.) only helps the group’s concert belonging to Johnny’s (mainly in Nagoya and Kansai) as back dancers. They are not affiliated with the office, they are gathered from former Johnny’s Jr and other people’s connections.

6. Taiwan Jr & Hong Kong Jr

When KinKi Kids Asian Tour in February 2000, audition of Concert Jr was held in Taiwan and Hong Kong. It selected from local people and called as “Taiwan Jr” (台湾Jr.) and “Hong Kong Jr” (香港Jr.). One of Taiwan Jr who selected in May 2001, Nakama Junta (Johnny’s WEST) then became a member of Kansai Johnny’s Jr.

Trivia

  • The boys who is not yet officially included in the framework of Johnny’s Jr. is called “trainee” or “kenshusei” (研修生). In the past, it existed under the name of “Geiken Johnny’s” (芸研ジャニーズ ) and “Johnny’s Geiken Group” (ジャニーズ・芸研グループ).
  • Besides through auditions as usual, Johnny’s Jr members can be selected through the School Kakumei Audition. They were Hashimoto Kazuki, Horinouchi Tatsuya, Ohtsuki Hisashi, Kochi Yugo, Komori Mario, Kurita Kei, Yoshino Shota and Takahara Chikara Hamson Jr.
  • Or some of them entered Johnny’s without audition. It usually called as “scout”. Johnny Kitagawa choose directly and invite them to entered. They are Igari Soya, Morimoto Shintaro, Kyomoto Taiga, Yasui Kentaro.
  • Johnny’s doesn’t officially recruit the talent. Many resumes send monthly then Johnny Kitagawa himself selected the documents.
  • The audition held irregular. After pass and entered Johnny’s, they begin the lessons such as dancing for free.
  • Former members of Johnny’s Jr who currently work as manager in Johnny’s are Ito Masashi, Miyazaki Yukimasa and Mori Yusuke. Ito Masashi is Kanjani8’s manager.
  • Not all Johnny’s Jr debut as a singer or in a group by releasing CD debut. Ikuta Toma is active as an actor. Kazama Shunsuke, Yara Tomoyuki, Hasegawa Jun, Sano Mizuki and Fo~Yu~ are also graduated from Johnny’s Jr and debuted as actor or work in stage plays.
  • Sano Mizuki became an oldest Johnny’s Jr before he finally graduated and has a single page in Johnny’s Net on October 15, 2015. He was born on September 26, 1973 and in 2013 became a topic in the internet as “40 years old Johnny’s Jr.”
  • Johnny’s Jr has no fans club but it has “Johnny’s Jr information” (ジャニーズジュニア情報局).
  • As of July 2016, Johnny’s Jr members (Tokyo and Kanto) have reached around 300 people.
  • No announcement in magazine, newspaper, TV or official site when there is a member of Johnny’s Jr left Johnny’s. Except some cases such as Yonehana Tsuyoshi, Akiyama Jun, Kohara Yuki and Love-tune members.
  • They are not allow to have SNS (social media) such as Twitter and Instagram.
